If you’ve always wanted to learn to crochet but didn’t know where to start, this guide is for you!
What is crochet?
Crochet is a DIY technique that only needs a single needle (a hook) and yarn.
By crocheting, you can create endless projects such as scarves, blankets, sweaters, cardigans, etc.
Here we will give you some basic info to get you started.
What do I need to start crocheting?
-
Crochet hook
Our crochet hooks are handmade by artisans using beechwood and a natural varnish.
Crochet hooks come in different sizes, so make sure to choose the perfect size for the type of yarn you will be using and also for your project. -
Yarn
Choosing the right yarn for your project will ensure that your finished product looks and feels the way you want it to (all our yarns are 100% natural!).
Yarn comes in different sizes and qualities, so make sure your yarn is suitable for your project and your hook. We suggest using a bulky or super bulky yarn for beginners, as it will help you seeing the stitches and where to insert the hook.

How to crochet
-
How to crochet a chain
1. To start a foundation chain, make a loop with the yarn you are going to use for your project and hold the base with the thumb and middle finger of your left hand. Insert your crochet hook into the loop and wrap the yarn leading to the ball of yarn around the hook.
2. Draw the yarn through the loop and gently pull on the two ends of yarn to adjust the loop to the hook. You have made the initial knot.
3. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the loop on the hook. This is your first chain.
4. Repeat the last step until you have the number of chains indicated in the pattern. -
How to crochet a single crochet
Single crochet is started by working into the second chain. When you start the row, you will have to make a chain 1 turning chain to count as the first single crochet.
1. Insert the crochet hook into the stitch of the previous row as indicated in the pattern.
2. Yarn over.
3. Draw yarn through both loops on the crochet hook.
4. Yarn over again and draw yarn through both loops on the crochet hook. -
How to double crochet
To start a row in double crochet, you need to chain three.1. Yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch of the previous row as indicated in the pattern.
2. Yarn over again and draw yarn through chain and up onto the working area of the crochet hook. You now have three loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over and draw yarn through the first two loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over and draw yarn through the remaining loops on the hook. -
How to change yarn
1. When you are running out of yarn leave a 12-inch (30 cm) tail of yarn behind your work.
2. Start working the next stitch, which means, work the stitch until the final yarn over, do not work this final yarn over.
3. Pick up the end of the yarn from the new skein, leaving a 12-inch (30 cm) tail behind your work. Yarn over with the new yarn and pull it through the two loops on your hook.
4. Continue working as usual. -
How to finish your crochet project
1. Once you have finished crocheting your project, cut the yarn leaving a 10 inch (25 cm) tail and pull the yarn out through the last stitch.2. Make a knot and weave in the tail end of yarn about 3 inches (8 cm), cut off even with the fabric. Weave in any loose ends in the same way.
